*She is an Astronomer Lunch*

Tuesday, 7th September 12:30 - 14:30

*Introduction: *
The She is an Astronomer Lunch session is an opportunity for women to get together to meet each other and do a bit of networking. Men are welcome to attend too! The lunch gives people time to explore an issue of common interest, and they are so popular there is often a waiting list, so book early. The IYA2009 Cornerstone Project 'She is an Astronomer' has highlighted that mentoring is an essential tool in the career-development of women.

*Brief talk:*
Mentoring at the Ruhr-University Bochum - equal opportunities for female scientists
(Eva Juette - Astronomisches Institut Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum, Germany)

Mentoring is a very powerful and successful tool for individual promotion of young academics. While many companies have already established mentoring programs as part of the qualification scheme, universities nowadays start to  use this concept to support and motivate young academics and help them to be prepared for the multifaceted tasks during a scientific career. In collaboration with the neighbouring universities Duisburg-Essen and Dortmund, the Ruhr-University Bochum has established a comprehensive mentoring program for female scientists at different career stages.  Undergraduate students, PhD students and postdocs of all  academic disciplines can take part in peer mentoring, one-to-one mentoring with experienced professionals as well as additional seminars as part of the program. These offers allow the mentees to outline perspectives and strategies of an academic career, to attain key qualifications, gain knowledge of academic structures, processes and policies, and establish interdisciplinary networks.
